What's with all the Mountain Dew love in America? They recently brought it into my country and all I can say is meh. It's basically a sweeter, less healthy Sprite.
When you're a kid and you drink it you get that super sweet sugary rush. When you're older and you drink it you just wish you were drinking something that wasn't killing you.

It legitimately tastes worse every year that I avoid drinking it. I might have, maybe, one if my wife brings me one home when she goes out with her girlfriends, and every time I get about a quarter of the way through the bottle and have to tap out. There's enough crap in it that it legitimately gives me stomach cramps just from drinking it. To put it another way, "perfect for someone with a sugar addiction."

I assume American gamers/nerds love it because gamers/nerds are supposed to love it. I guess it's a bit like how every true gamer e-celeb aught to stuff his background full of true gamer paraphernalia.
Pretty much this.
I think it might have a slightly higher caffeine content as well. But I'm pretty sure it's mostly marketing. Can't be a kewl gamer/nerd if you don't do the dew!

I don't like it, but sometimes I get a generic version of Code Red.

Can't say. I was always a freak when I drank soft drinks, and preferred Orange Sodas or Strawberry Sodas.
Sunkist is great.
I had strawberry faygo once (there is one store 20 minutes away that sells faygo and their selection is limited and varies) but it was good.

Mountain Dew got popular in gamer circles because A.) It's heavier on caffeine than most other readily available sodas by a fairly significant amount and B.) Pepsi-Cola spent the better part of 2000- now pandering to them with shit like "game fuel!" Which was just cans and bottles with Halo pictures and shit on them. It's all a marketing gimmick. If you ask me the best sodas are stuff like Rootbeer and Squirt. Mountain Dew is about as generic as name brand soda gets in the US.

I've noticed one of my local Walmarts unironically stocked some shelves right across from the game counter with Mountain Dew and Doritos.

Don't forget cream soda. Add any fruit flavoring to it and you have something delicious. If you like the fruit taste, at least.

Big Red always tasted more like bubble gum to me. That was my jam back in high school. They were like 50 cents at the gas station right next door.

I think I had a Dr Pepper once in over a decade, and I think it just tasted like stale coke or something. But maybe I just had a shitty taste back then, who knows.

Now you just need a shelf full of Funky Pops, and you've got yourself the nerd equivalent of the pink aisle.
