They added some chick in the recent theatrical remake series. Don't remember what her name is and I don't care enough to look it up. I think she was some sort of US Agent? Shows you how memorable that character was.

It would be Mari, and she at least has a semblance of a character, but the only reason for this character is to have a character that Asuka can be gay with to appease fans.
In 3.0 they added a whole bunch of new characters that serve no actual purpose, but at least everyone of them was aware how shitty Shinji is, except maybe for Toji's sister.
