I remember when it first debuted, There was so much pre-release hype. Everybody thought we were going to get another Gunbuster-tier masterpiece. And if you watch the early episodes, it looked like it could happen. Then it became super pretentious and incoherent.

Supposedly Hideaki Anno got super depressed because Noriko Hidaka (Nadia, Noriko Takaya) rejected him and married some other guy.
