This is worse than just paying the fine (which is equivalent to pleading guilty), since he has a conviction on his record, AND has to pay the court costs.

It's not a conviction. This is a traffic ticket which is an infraction at best.

That's what gets me. He created a bunch of extra work for the court and justice system on a case he never intended to show up for. What a huge faggot. And it looks worse for him than if he'd just pled guilty.

I'm not convinced he really made that much more work for anybody. The judge in traffic court probably goes through like a hundred cases a day. The bailiff probably called out his name and when he didn't answer the judge probably just said 'Next case' and they moved on. The only person he might have possibly inconvenienced are the traffic cop and the people he hit, if they showed up, and the traffic cop much like the judge probably testifies at hundreds of cases in a given week.

It's still a dickish thing to do, I'm not disagreeing about that.

Would insurance cover their hospital bills or would he have to pay out of pocket for those?

It will, but there is a cap on how much insurance will pay out depending on the policy. Spoon would have bought the bare minimum and. since he has shitty insurance it's probably only $20k with a $1,000 deductable or even higher.
