Hoping for the death of Patreon is pretty unrealistic and also ignores that it’s far too late to close that Pandora’s Box. I don’t know what Patreon is being sued for and I don’t care, but I’m sure they have enough money to settle at least some of this stuff out of court and also elongate the court proceedings for years to come.

Even if they went bankrupt, it doesn’t matter, there’s money to be made in being the middle man in organized paymebux. As long as a Frantic Fernando or a Grandma Loopy want welfare in exchange for creating shitty videos but don’t qualify for the government kind, there will always be Patreon or a Patreon surrogate to supply them with fan-based welfare instead. The rules might become a bit more strict though, that’s all I can see changing, maybe Patreon or some variation of Patreon might have to actually enforce their anti-scamming rules. Maybe.

IIRC the threat to Patreon in this case is that there was a ruling that forced Patreon to go into arbitration with each user who was supporting a creator they cancelled. So that could be millions of complaints that would be about nickels and dimes, but the users had low cost and effort and Patreon had to cover the legal fees of arbitration or something. So that might kill them.

But sure, nothing stops Matreon to be founded the day after with different EULA terms that avoid arbitration in a different state.

Patreon could weather the storm if not for all the community managers on their payroll. As a bsuiness, patreon is incredibly profitable and stable. You only need to hire accountants and programmers and maybe a few graphic designers. Core staff could've been 12-20 peeps, have a rich guy up top and nothing else. Stripe and paypal handle all the actual cash.

When they wanted to push spotlighting creators and community shit and get all regulatory on their patreons is where they fucked up. I promise you all their social staff outnumbers their tech staff 3 to 1 and also get paid more too. If they kept to the core staff that made their tech go and a summer intern to handle social media they'd be fine
