There was crazy enthusiasm over Star Wars in 2015. They could have kept it going, but "The Last Jedi" didn't do a good job of selling the new characters, doing justice to the old characters, or providing a cliffhanger for the next installment. The franchise didn't have any direction. It didn't feel like it was building up to anything. JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson were on different pages entirely.

These days, they're playing mostly to people who are just dedicated to the brand for whatever reason.
