Maul is not in episode two, he gets talked about now in connection to the prequels mainly because of Filloni's retcons in Clone Wars.
The prequels are a test of how far Ewan Macgregor can carry a movie for me - he's not really in Phantom Menace and it shows - he's not well written in the other two, but he plays it really charismatically - the one to two genuine laughs 2 and 3 produced were both him.
3 also has memes - making it kind of fun to quote along with.
They're definitely not undeserving of criticism or being shat on - but I was surprised by all the stuff I memoryholed that I didn't dislike.
