Only thing I heard about was that the next movie was a prequel and that's why they aren't using him. Only person confirmed to be gone is Patty Jenkins due to how sit her Wonder Woman 3 script was.

I just now saw Cavill's post where he believes from his interactions with Gunn that he is fired.

But honestly. While Cavill could work as Superman, the problem is that general audiences will associate him with the Snyderverse and would hesitate to go watch a movie with him. It's a problem with all the actors that were a part of it. It may be best to wipe the slate clean with a reboot.
