They just don't make good flags anymore. The regular tri-coloured flag is kinda boring but it works if your colours aren't silly. But they don't make awesome shit like the Reichskriegsflagge in my sig anymore. It's a sad time for fans of heraldry like me.
We've still got pretty great flags for regional ones but you pretty much never actually see them on government buildings.
My city's and regional flags rule and even my state's flag is great if you actually keep the coat of arms in it as you should:

And just to answer this one specifically:
My problem isn't that it's a tricolore. My problem aren't that the colours are bad. My problem is that it's historically the flag of losers and shit states. You could say that the Holy Roman Empire eventually lost and was gone and you'd be correct. But it existed for over 850 years. There's not too many nations that can say that about themselves.
Meanwhile, we have the same flag as, stated above, a failed revolution, those same revolution faggots trying to make it into the national flag and failing, the most famous ultra fail nation on this soil and the same flag or the Soviet occupied commie nation just without the hammer and sickle compass.
