I really don't understand how it works. It seems that comics just stick around forever, no matter if they're still funny or relevant. Some of them have literally been running over a hundred years.

A lot of it has to do with syndicates keeping them around so they don't lose precious newspaper space. Peanuts is a perfect example of this practice: the strip ended when Charles Schulz died decades ago, yet the syndicate has been rerunning the same strips from the 60s to the 80s since 2000. Other ancient comics are on perpetual life support, but Peanuts is a zombie.

I also assume they're dirt cheap. Especially if you have a huge stack of thousand of the fuckers already drawn decades ago that you just keep rotating through.
