WATCHING HORROR MOVIES FOR OCTOBER

Last night was the 1931 "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi. Seen it many times already, but I finally bought the 4K disc. I love this movie, but it's hard to recommend to young people. It isn't paced like anything that they're used to, from its gradual build-up to its abrupt ending. There's also very little music. The key is Bela Lugosi. If you can enjoy him, you'll enjoy the movie. He played Dracula on stage before in Hungary, but I believe this was his first time doing it in English. Lugosi barely knew the language so he's largely saying his lines phonetically. That's not bad, though. It helps him come off as more alien. Lugosi is still my favorite movie Dracula.

My second favorite is Udo Keir, who played Dracula as even more of an alien, but his movie ("Blood for Dracula" from the mid-1970s) plays it as a twisted joke, which I like, but Lugosi is still my nigga,
I watched that recently too, gonna watch The Wolfman next.

To me, the perfect version would be Coppola's Dracula, if it had Christopher Lee in it instead of Oldman
Did you ever hear the bit that Lee turned down the role of Dr. Loomis and regretted it? I love Donald Pleasance and would never replace him but love to imagine the alternate universe where we got Lee in that role.

Zoomers lack the patience for watching actual cinema, let alone sitting through anything longer than 10 minutes.

Old kino is the true kino. Writers etc. actually needed talent, and they had to do more with less.

To stay with vampires for example, take this incel move from Nosferatu (pardon the apparent AI coloring; it's the best clip of this scene I could get):

Or this scene from the original All Quite on the Western Front (still the best version) where the grunts, in a rare moment of luxury (aka they get double the rations because only half of them made it back from the front), attempt to figure out politics.

There's a theater here that shows "Nosferatu" every October 30 with live music accompaniment. That show is my Halloween. It's a great time. Like all silent films, it was meant to be seen big with loud, live music. I wish I could see them all that way.

I think you're thinking of Tom Waits.

VORP is so miserable in his marriage, raising his disappointing children, that he daydreams about being Tom Cruise's boyfriend in Interview with the Vampire.

To be fair that still would be less degenerate than dealing with the loli vampire.

I assume you mean anyone else instead of Keanu "can't act for shit" Reaves.

Interview with the Vampire's greatest sin was using a Guns 'n' Roses cover of Sympathy for the Devil instead of the Rolling Stones version. The Roses version is okay, but you can't replace the Stones.

My favourite part of this is imagining Lee ranting about the Halloween sequels like he did with Dracula.

"I told them, this is NOT Michael Myers, it is NOT John Carpenter's character, you're writing these scripts first and then figuring out how to work him in."
