Re: Movie Thread
They're not a Netflix Original. They have to wait how well part 1 does in order to decide if a part 2 will be worth it.

Re: Movie Thread
I was assuming it was a back-to-back production like the LOTR trilogy, in which they filmed it as if it was one movie and decided to split it up for release.

Stops half way? As in in the middle of Dune or where the book stops as well?

Re: Movie Thread
Them not trying to cram the entire first book into one movie was pretty much the big gimmick of this adaptation.

Re: Movie Thread
That'd be fine if the rest had been filmed and was already in post-production.
Anyway, it seems to have been a financial success so far.

Not that Villeneuve uses the time to expand on anything, by the way. It's all dedicated to visual effects. You won't see anything in this film that wasn't in Lynch's film plot or characterwise. In fact, I'd argue you see even less somehow.
For example, we all know the Baron from 1984 is batshit crazy, but Lynch still at least managed to have him elaborate that he
1) wants to take vendetta on the Atreides
2) that he intends to use Rabban as a patsy before replacing him with Feyd
3) that he's a fucking disgusting human being.
The 2021 Baron just grumbles "my Dune" and "I want income" with a gormless expression on his face. They spend no time establishing his connection with Leto, or his relationship with his underlings, or why any of this is even happening. He might as well just be the Emperor's greedy henchman. It's a total waste of the character. Palpatine had more to do in Rise of Skywalker than the Baron does here.

Re: Movie Thread
Screen time well spent it seems.
I was fully expecting that a Current Year adaptation would've turned the Harkonnens into evil colonizers (I mean that's what they effectively were in the book), but apparently they did nothing with them.
