Is that anything new in Hollywood? There are numerous examples of stupid garbage movies that should never had been filmed to begin with, but they went for it anyway. A finished flop can probably be used for accounting tricks, using the rights for TV syndication and foreign box office numbers to inflate the profits ("this movie was a surprising success in Guatemala and French Guiana! I swear!").
