Then why did he surround himself with yes men?
Why would you hire people to fight against you?

Everybody sucks Gary Kurtz's dick, but it's not like he was constantly shooting down bad ideas, plus he got fired because he let Empire go massively over budget. OMG, master producer!

You generally try to hire people due to their expertise, so they can give you valuable input and warn you if you become too autistic.
I don't think anyone at the set of Episde 1 ever challenged his decisions, which is why the movie feels like it's based on the first draft.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Lucas actually did good job on American Graffiti, and it is mostly character driven film. I remember watching the docu from the dvd where actors said that Lucas kept them doing retakes with some scenes till they screwed up something or flubbed their lines, and then used those takes, so the film would feel more natural. I don't think talentless film maker would do that, at least not as effectively.

Or else he should have stuck to producing. His producer credits are much better, overall and much more accomplished, than his directing credits.
Labyrinth is peak cinema.

In his defense, he tried to get others to write and direct the prequels but everyone turned him down.
Nobody wanted to work with him because he was also a shit producer. He was bossy and micromanaged every director he ever worked with. He hypocritically denied these directors their creative freedom while demanding that for himself. We've heard stories about George's notes: "Make him sound like Truman Capote", "change the name of that character to my son's name", "Call the villain Darth Icky", and that probably only scratches the surface.

Ron Howard was one of those guys that directed for George once for Willow and refused to direct any prequels for George. He only came back to Star Wars after George had gone.

Yes but, even if you set out to find people like this, once you become a Lucas or once you become a Peter Jackson or whoever and you've got a certain amount of proven success, even competent people will hesitate to second guess you because they think 'Well, that's not the way I would have done it, but clearly this guy knows what he's talking about so I'll let him get on with it'

It's not hypocritical at all. Lucas hires you to direct a movie, you've been hired basically to direct his movie. This is why David Lynch didn't work with him.

Hypocritical because George Lucas came from New Hollywood which was literally a movement where directors fought against the studios for their creative vision.

Yeah, for THEIR visions. Not other people's visions. Just theirs.

No. If George wanted creative control, he should have directed those movies himself. But he was too lazy.

Spielberg made the same mistake by being a control freak on Poltergeist. But at least Spielberg admitted he had made a mistake by overstepping Tobe Hooper and didn't do it again after that.
