The whole THAC0 autism basically started because they decided that "Armour Class 0" should be the default value around which your capability to hitting stuff should be measured against, instead of say the actual base AC.
This was somewhat sane earlier one when 0 was the best possible AC, but then later editions had critters with negative ACs.
