After two years of covid lockdowns and restrictions, as well as politicians even now trying their best to maintain restrictions indefinitely, I would say it's neither surprising nor altogether incorrect to hear the word 'authoritarian' bandied about so casually
You and I would probably agree on what authoritarianism really is. The word itself though has been beaten to a pulp. I don't use it.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone labeled an authoritarian more than Donald Trump. Also, Ron DeSantis is apparently an authoritarian for lifting pandemic restrictions and his Parental Rights bill. And Elon Musk is now an authoritarian for his free speech stance.

It's not commonly used here at all. Instead populism and anti-democratic are used heavily against anything right of Stalin.
The irony of calling someone a populist and anti-democratic at the same time is completely lost on them. It's a lot like Antifa has their own definition of fascism to obfuscate their agenda to people that just take the name at face value.
