Well, you can fail English lit, but it takes some doing. You'd pretty much have to never show up to class and never hand in any of your assignments. Or hand in your assignments but be so incredibly illiterate that even the most liberal of professors would have no choice but to fail you

I suppose that would depend on how shitty the college is/how petty the professors are. When I went (which was admittedly a while ago now) one of the other students turned in an English Lit assignment which got an 80 (the grades ranged from 0-100 but typically most students were looking at a mark of anywhere between 50-70. You'd have to be pretty shit to get below 50). Anyway, the professor wrote in the feedback section something like 'I disagree with every single one of your conclusions but I have no choice but to award you such high marks'.

So I guess theoretically you could be to the right of Hitler and so long as any point you argue is well reasoned and well argued (what they're supposed to be testing for) they can't really fail you. Of course in practice it doesn't always work that way

It depends on the teacher. I definitely remember students in my courses who were pissed off because their personality or opinions clashed with those of the professor. I got the impression, although I don't know if this was entirely accurate, that they were being docked points for their opinions.

I had one professor I felt I could not get along with at all. I ended up dropping her class after the first or second session. She was supposed to be teaching Shakespeare but she hated Hamlet. She called it adolescent, white male pandering garbage. I couldn't deal with a person like that. Even if you hold that opinion, to say it on the first day of class, and also to state that you had no intention to teach any of the Shakespeare stories you didn't personally like? Pass.
