Hadn't the British just haphazardly call that chunk of land Palestine when they and the French divided up the land after the fall of the Ottomans? The Arabs currently living their are basically Jordanians which was also named around the same time. Palestine is just an old Roman name that came up once in a while during their empire, like Syria.

Leave to the British to ruin everything. I've finished reading July 1914 and it's remarkable how the Austro-Hungarian empire, despite boldly annexing Bosnia-Herzegovina without asking anyone, still didn't have problems with the Muslim minority that came with it. In fact, after the first bomb thrown at Franz Ferdinand's motorcade, the Austrian security forces decided to divert his route through the Muslim area of Sarajevo because it was deemed safer from terrorists. If only Oskar Potiorek had notified the Archiduke's driver of that change...
