Hadn't the British just haphazardly call that chunk of land Palestine when they and the French divided up the land after the fall of the Ottomans? The Arabs currently living their are basically Jordanians which was also named around the same time. Palestine is just an old Roman name that came up once in a while during their empire, like Syria.
