For the longest time, up until a few years ago, I confused custard with clam chowder and didn't understand the obsession of Brits with custard.
It still sounds like something made from clams to me, since the word "custard" makes absolutely no sense to me. Why not fucking call it vanilla sauce, like everyone ever anywhere?
