Man, talk about a blast from the past. They made like only one movie not based on any of the comics, but man did they go all out on that one.

Shit, really? I thought the 12 Labours of Asterix was a comic as well.

René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the creators of the series, wrote the story and directed the film themselves; with co-direction by Pierre Watrin and the screenplay co-written by Pierre Tchernia, a friend of Goscinny and Uderzo. The film was directed, produced and animated at Goscinny and Uderzo's own animation studio, Studios Idéfix and is the only Asterix animated film that has used the Xerography Process.

Ah, ok, now it makes sense. The whole thing was too Goscinny-esque to not be from him.

They basically asked him to tell an original story, and he decided to do a possible "finale", as it ends with the Romans fucking off for good and Julius retiring to be with his Egyptian waifu (stuff unlikely to ever happen in the actual comic).

It did however get a comic adaptation, though that one isn't quite official and rare af. The only adapation readily available is short book with illustrations (not to be confused with a proper comic), using artwork and storyboards made for the film afaik.
