Ultimately though, HK is probably fucked unless someone wants to insert themselves into a potential WW3.
It doesn't necessarily have to come to that. The best thing to do would be to do what we did with Afghanistan when they fought the Soviets: train them, give them weapons and have them fight the Chinese themselves. Probably work out better than Afghanistan since they're unlikely to turn their weapons on us once the Chinese have fucked off

It's certainly a breath of fresh air to have a president who has enough balls to trigger China. For decades, the Communist Party has been untouchable to the west, with every mutual press conference being carefully worded to only mention enough about muh democracy, muh human rights and most importantly muh fair trade relationships* to appease the people at home. The biggest betrayal anyone ever did was give the Dalai Lama too much of a spotlight, but it seems they've learned their lessons a couple years ago.

*) You can tell this is the most important bit, since China has been promising for years to open their market. Of course, nothing ever comes of it and they keep gaming the system.

You do realize that Hong Kong is close enough to the rest of China that the Chinese military could just lop over missiles and artillery shells until they grow bored of it?

They could but they won't. They'd just have to rebuild it. It's the civil war argument

Not if they have any common sense. A lot of businesses love to do business in Hong Kong. They bomb it, they'll fuck themselves worse than they'll have fucked the Hong Kongers.

If the protesters had the military might to push the Chinese back there's not really anything they could do in response.

And western businesses use Hong Kong as a buffer to do business in China. It will kill most of their trade if they invade, and they need US business more than the US needs them.

I'm not convinced China isn't willing to DFE in an autistic fit of insectoid rage.

I guess it depends on much the people of HK manage to trigger the shit out of them. Not wanting to lose valuable trade opportunities might be the logical thing to do, but we're talking about a schoolyard bully who isn't really used to people that are neither afraid of him, nor keep walking on egg shells around him.

(Also they really hate people in their own turf not respecting their authority.)

We're also talking about ideology vs money here. China's party line brainwashing shit right now is that HK is part of China and belongs to them by right. So you have to ask yourself if that indoctrination and enforcing that belief to the world is worth more than the buffer zone HK provides to people trying to buy and sell to China.

Like guestposter, I remain unconvinced China won't go for the autistic ragefit option. Commies love their fucking indoctrination. Even if a lie is a lie and everyone involved knows it's a lie, a commie will fucking kill to keep that lie going. And yes, I know China is not economically communist anymore, but they still are socially. They still treat their citizens like dirt and like Chinese dirt, they feel their citizens are best stomped flat and marinated liberally in poisonous gases.

Look at how many of these toxic cities are in China.
