I wonder how common it is for doctors to be honest with patients about the potential negative outcomes of these gender surgeries. Along with greed, fear of being perceived as transphobic, and perhaps even genuine belief that these surgeries are good, there's also the added complication that their patient is a mentally ill person who doesn't interpret information well.

I assume there's always a risk of a lawsuit if you tell a transsexual they shouldn't transition. That the surgery is expensive is just a coincidence!

I also think there's a pressure with any mental illness case to get the patient on a plan of treatment that they believe will be effective. Because, whether it is or not, their belief that it will be effective may, in itself, help in the short term with their illness.
