It wasn't a thing at all. We never had slavery of any kind. Mostly because Europe has a feudal background, so the pesantry was pretty much all slaves anyway to varying degrees.

And of course there were no jails. For most of human history (even in the far lands of the White Man), jails were only really a thing for nobles and shit you catched during a battle and plan to sell back for ransom.
For your average criminal you didn't bother to keep him fed in some jail. You gave him an immediate punishment, like a fine, banishment, some hits with a whip/stick, mutilation, or death.

Jails are a good thing, dude. The alternative would be entire hoods whose gangstaz have only one hand.
