It's really only DeSantis' fans who are trying to rival him against Trump. Fact is that, if they came head to head, DeSantis would get crushed. DeSantis knows this, and he doesn't want to compete with Trump anyway.

There are two types of people who want DeSantis to run instead of/against Trump at this stage:
1) More traditional cuckservative types who prefer the more 'polite' DeSantis over Trump
2) Genuine populist types who are concerned about the influence people like Kushner have over Trump, and think that DeSantis will avoid this

That only happened because the GOP did what the GOP does best and betrayed Teddy. In the 1912 primaries Teddy won every single contest that was voted on. But the GOP decided 'fuck the voters' and gave it to Taft at the GOP convention. So Teddy said 'I'll start my own party, with blackjack, and hookers' and the rest is history

That situation is not likely to repeat itself, largely because Presidential primaries don't work the way they did in 1912
