I was about to tell the guest not to be a dipshit but then I got curious about the process over there. We have the bring your own bag method here, but I can only think of a few shops I’ve been in. where it was mandatory. I also learned that you must prepare to haul ass at checkout, and what a flaschenwald is. DHI sidetracking me with world knowledge once again, come to call somebody a punk ass bitch, stay for the education.

Is self checkout often seen over there? That’s my preferred way of shopping.

We just never had grocery baggers. Most people would view it as condescending.
Self-checkout exists in very few stores. I'm only aware of one chain that has them but most tried. It's been tried for twenty years and will never be the standard. Too many issues, most people require a handler, you always have to watch for easy theft. In the end you might as well just stick to having a cashier and get the fucks out of the store faster.
Regular cashiers process easily four times as many people in the same time.

This. I prefer to bag my own goods and always decline help taking my bags to the truck. Shop at an American Walmart Kugel and you’ll understand what Rabid and I are talking about when it comes to sheer incompetence. Car battery and eggs, I’ve heard some bad combos but goddamn that’s the worst so far.

I was a grocery cashier way back in the day and the first thing they taught us was how to bag groceries. I've forgotten most of it but there was an actual process that I immediately noticed nobody else ever used. They just jam a shit ton of stuff into one bag while staring at their phones.

In Canada they're trying to do away with cashiers in general. I think Wal-mart is trying to implement self-serve only in the coming year.

It's a bad idea that will never work. The average person is just way too dumb and most drop an additional 30 IQ points as soon as they enter a store as customers.
People can hardly handle operating bottle return machines.

You need one person to observe two self-checkout registers if you don't want to get scammed like crazy.
Scanners like to double scan stuff on occasion so the handler has to go remove that item, in which time they can't keep an eye on the other registers.
Unless your store carries no more than ten items, some item will not work. No store has perfect data.
People will never, ever, ever learn how to operate them.
People can't tell basic fruit apart, not even with pictures.

Again, it's been tried so often and it was never worth it. The result has always been that you save zero labour costs when you consider the super slow checkout time.
Self-checkout registers are the communism of super market advisors. They all think it just hasn't been tried properly before.

Just get some part time cashiers instead. At least those can go stock shelves when they aren't needed at the register.
