I'm starting to see some kind of doublethink going on with the terms "queer-coding" vs "queer-baiting".

Both basically boil down to "Character X is totally queer (because my headcanon says so)!"

In both cases it's guaranteed the queerness will never be made canon (because it never existed in the first place), but strangely enough when it's "-coding" this isn't an issue, but when it's "-baiting" it is a betrayal of Spoonian proportions, as the poor audience was "fooled" into believing that there was queer-coding afoot.

It appears to me that "-coding" seems to pop up more often when talking about older stuff, or stuff (supposedly) aimed at kids. Anything to cope about how "Character X wasn't/isn't allowed to be openly queer like they totally are I swear!"

Now when it's live-action and/or more "mature" this can quickly veer into "-baiting" when the goods aren't delivered.
Example: All those fujio fucks losing their goddamn mind about the 2010 Sherlock series not ending with Sherlock and Holmes making sweet, sweet love to each other.
