When you "escalate" shit fast enough, the other party has no time to get ready and you can steer the situation. If you wait for the other guy to get comfortable molesting the shit out of you, well he is going to do exactly that or worse. Take initiative and take control. The one who wins the fight is often the person who mentally and emotionally prepared himself for it first.
The first time you even see two homeless people who are obviously high, you should be fingering whatever weapon you have with you and looking for exits outta there. Don't stay where trouble is, yeah? I'm not saying run every time you see a homeless person. I wouldn't be able to go anywhere in my hellhole city if I did that. But I'm about my purpose when I'm on the street. I'm going somewhere and I'm paying attention to what's around me. If I see somebody who is out of control, I walk either in the other direction or into a more public area.
