THOUGHTS ON HAVING A TRANS CO-WORKER FOR ABOUT A YEAR

He is a man who calls himself a woman. He does not pass as a woman in any way. He has a man's voice and a man's features. He looks like James Hetfield from Metallica started wearing dresses and lipstick. I had no hand in hiring him, but he does work under me and he reports to me. I'm his supervisor.

Thoughts:

- Generally, I like him. We're not far from each other in age and our conversations are mostly about music and old clubs, bars, and restaurants. He and I have probably been in the same room a few times over the decades.

- My least favorite thing about him is that he seems to have a touch of autism. For a fucking year now, he will talk to me about sports. Dude's a big sports fan, everything from American basketball to worldwide soccer/football, while I don't give a shit about sports and have nothing to say when he goes on (and on and on) about it. I'm constantly amazed that he doesn't notice my disinterest.

- When he's not in the room, my liberal co-workers will "misgender" him here and there. They'll say "he" instead of "she". Sometimes they catch themselves immediately and cringe over their "mistake" and apologize (to me!) for it, like they just did something horribly wrong. Sometimes they don't notice at all that they just did it, but I noticed, and I say nothing.

- I have seen him misgendered a FEW times to his face and, to his credit, he takes it in stride. He doesn't make a big deal about it. He's never complained about it to me, at least, or anyone else that I know about.

- Some of the women in the office do this annoying "girl talk" shit with each other. "Hey pretty lady, LOVE those shoes!". They don't do that much with him. He likes really flamboyant, glittery purses and I've heard them talk about that, but for the most part I don't get the sense that he's "one of the girls".

- I still don't know what his sexual preferences are, though some in the office have said that he's attracted to women.

- It's no surprise that he's a loony leftist. He thinks that the assassination attempts on Trump were fake, staged by his campaign for votes.
