It's just a "EU candidate" status, which is a fancy way of saying "We think you're alright".
Even ignoring Russia for a moment, this process can take decades, and will likely never get anywhere because of the rampant corruption in the Ukraine.

Or that Russia was going to lose? Putin can't back down because he's already taken the sanctions hit. Maybe if the west had left him some kind of out, the war could have been over? The way things are now, he has to gamble on losing the western global market. So why not go all-out to take Ukraine too?

Reminds me of the Water Margin, where men would be framed for crimes, thrown into prison and their murders plotted in secret. Upon discovering there was nothing they could do to return to polite society, they had to either accept death or go for broke. "Whether I kill one or one hundred, I can only hang once!"

This simple truth applies everywhere and at all times. Any group or individual left without an out will inevitably turn to the furthest extremes out of desperation.
