Robert De Niro should prove to anyone that actors have a shelf life that shouldn't be ignored.

Most of the actors I can think of that were good as geezers died 50 years ago (Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Alec Guinness).

Current Year +8 is less kind.

Current year writing doesn't have the same kind of place for old character actors with interesting (rather than handsome/beautiful) faces. I could write a lot more about this, but it's something I've noticed with older movies and shows. Even though beauty has always been a big deal in the movies, older films had roles prepared for quality actors who weren't attractive.

What I've noticed nowadays, however, is that most tv shows and films feature either very young/pretty people or older people who are trying to LOOK pretty/young. Not often do we see shows with secondary characters who look old/unattractive and still carry scenes with their acting talents.

When we do see an old person in new movies, it's a Harrison Ford or Arnold situation: An old fart trying to recapture their youth playing a "young man" role. That's not what I mean or want at all. I want to see old people who are playing old people. Old people who can fucking act and carry a scene and be an old person-not some video game geriatric slotted into a generic action movie because they have brand recognition.

Something nice can be said for John Goodman and Steve Buscemi - but they’re so rarely used well - and they’re not exactly jumping off rooftops.

As seen with these screenshots, a lot of old actors are *white*. We can't have that.

EDIT: Apparently The Little Mermaid of Color is underperforming on the Chinese market. I wonder why...
