Soap opera acting throughout, a second act that drags, but the third act is glorious. I had a good time with it.

Goddamn. Guest posting is okay sometimes, except when you guys insist on being stealers of joy.
That was a pretty specific description. You probably shouldn't be calling someone else a massive homo, tranny porn watcher.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 12:56 amYou're endorsement is the anti-endorsement I needed. Re: Movie Thread
Dune 2021 came out here.
It's mediocre. The biggest fucking thing that I can't get around is the set design. You have the natureloving Atreides, the industrious Harkonnen, the decadent Corrino, the dry wastelands of Arrakis... this shit should be a set designer's wet dream.
Say what you will about Lynch's film, but by God, the sets looked fucking fantastic. So why does everybody live in the same dark austere empty caves here? I spent half the movie forcing myself not to yell "turn on a fucking lamp already!". Everyone are always standing in the shadows like Batman.
The script is shallow. Kind of amazing considering it's fucking DUNE. Even the 1984 film had some shit worth remembering in its script. But here, they just run through all the important plot points without a care. Nobody has one fucking meaningful conversation.
Oh, speaking of the script - how the fuck is the Baron only in five minutes of this movie? Who does that? Stellan Skarsgard, bless his heart, growls his lines like a boss, but nothing he says is important. Hell, the entire Harkonnen rivalry with the Atreides is omitted. They're just the Emperor's asshole servants basically. That's how little heart there is in the script.
Acting is a mixed bag. Rebecca Ferguson and Josh Brolin are standouts. I really believed them as Jessica and Gurney, respectively. The rest either have too little screentime to make an impact(all Harkonnens, Stilgar, Leto) or are forgettable(Paul, Chani, Piter, Kynes, Yueh). Jason Momoa is okay, but he feels very restrained.
Another thing I have to shit on is the editing. It's kinda hard for a scene to have weight when Villeneuve refuses to let a conversation last longer than two minutes. The scene where Leto dies is crosscut constantly with Paul and Jessica chatting in the desert. What the fuck?
Overall, not impressed. Do not recommend. Watch the three hour cut of the 1984 film instead. Or if that's too confusing, watch the Syfy miniseries. It's silly, but competent enough and Ian McNeice is still the best Baron Harkonnen.
