That was joking hyperbole on my part.

I rarely if ever see somebody talk about the Psycho sequels despite them being good movies, in particular Psycho II. The popular Bates Motel spinoff completely ignored them. But they do much more to explore the psychology of Norman Bates than the first film(which kept his entire character mostly a mystery to be solved until the end) and have a more layered performance by the actor, who had obviously become better at his craft as he aged. The mystery of Psycho II is also compelling and original, since it's not really Norman who's the main antagonist of that movie.

Hitchcock's movie is so iconic that saying "Psycho II is also really good and improved on some aspects" is hardly going to get anyone to watch it. It seems like heresy to make a sequel to that film. But saying that "Psycho II is better" is more immediately attention-grabbing and might convince someone to check it out just to see what the hell that person is talking about.

Edit: What is true is that I don't know anything about giallo. I just thought Deep Red was alright and I like Phantasm lol.
