It is bullshit, though. Weebshit ain't rocket science. If your first episode fails to hook the audience and present the general premise, you done fucked up.
Either you're a hack who can't into proper storytelling, or you're a lazy fuck coasting off of the success of whatever manga or light novel your animu is based on.

But let's look at how some of the most iconic animu handled shit on this end:

• Mobile Suit Gundam: The first episode already has plenty of giant robot action and war crimes. If you're not sold now I dunno what your problem is
• Cowboy Bebop: The first episode already contains the essence of the animu. The next two episodes are really just more of the same goodness and won't win you over if you're not already on board

And of course, the greatest animated sentai show ever made starts like this:


There is however the occasional exception. I'm sure we can all agree that Mahou Shoujo Ai didn't reach its iconic levels of tentacle degeneracy until episode 3.
