Coming in touch with the wider "Mythos" stuff for the first time only after having read Lovecraft short stories confused the hell out of me. There's so much stuff he never mentioned or at least not in this manner.
For example where does random generic zombies and vampires come from, because dead people came back to life in Reanimator? A bit of a stretch if you ask me.

The only slash fic the master himself would approve is the ones written by me about them flying polyps invading every orifice of my Yithian body.

There is no such thing as a completely connected mythos in his stories. It's like claiming all of Steven King's novels take place in the same universe, just because it's almost always based in Maine.

Some stories are connected, some have nods to others, plenty have nothing to do with each other and just name drop Arkham for the fans.
The thought that it's all connected has been made up later, mostly by hipsters that only read or heard about the more popular stories.

The actual Lovecraft written "Call of Cthulhu" short story isn't even that amazing I think.
Have to concur here on the fever-dream stories, those stuck with me the most.
And of course the classic of man married to giant ape beast, why doesn't that one get referenced more often these days?
It is kind of topical.

It's basically how Zelda fantards are obsessed with their multiple timelines.

It's an almost-end-of-the-world story, retold way after the fact by some bloke who didn't have anything to do with any of the events. Riveting.
I guess people just liked the name.

"Call of Cthulhu" is, essentially, peak proto-Reddit.

It's fine but not nearly as good as The Colour out of Space for example.
Importantly, ignore any and all movie or game adaptions of Lovecraft stories. They are ranging from very mediocre to absolute garbage.

Yes.
And the story ends with his last descendant burning himself alive after discovering the reason why everyone in his family looked like a monkey.

It is referenced in that piece of shit woke game The Sinking City, in which the Humanzee is a strawman for Trump, and the fishmen of The Mask of Innsmouth are a strawman for the rapefugees.

The Nick Cage and Jeffrey Combs' movies aren't too bad, mainly because they are in them.
Maybe this one isn't bad either, but i never watched it:

Hah, that's even dumber than I thought.
I couldn't be happier that I completely ignored that game. My awful trash spidey sense was kinda tingling with that one.
