Or did they just use the character and make up their own shit and backstory?

AFAIK, he's the real deal in the Marvelverse. It's just that Asgardians there are actually aliens.
(Then things get confusing with the female Thor, which suggest that "Thor" is whoever the hammer has chosen.)

I mean how much of his marvelverse lore is based on our wordly lore on Thor.

Oh, that. Sadly not so much, unless there's an actual comic story where Thor indulges in crossdressing to crash a giant wedding.
Other than that, basically every name from Norse mythology has been turned into a capeshit character. Also Hel is basically the Devil.

Well, the crossdressing could be man-Thor turning into fem-Thor. Or something.

Nope, they're separate. She basically kneed him in the grotch and took his stuff and identity.
And fem-Thor could never crash a giant wedding, for the only people allowed to marry in Marvel comics are homosexual and/or interracial couples.
...
Wait, I think she might make sure that this law applies.

Somewhere I have a reprint of Thor's first appearance that I read 20 years ago. Thor was even more of a generic superhero back then. I haven't read it for years, but I remember him being some regular schlub that got transformed into a superhero by the spirit of Thor or something. He would change from his Clark Kent-like persona into Thor at will. I think he was even a reporter too with his own Lois Lane-type sorta-girlfriend.
