You also forgot this bit of code:

Code: Select all

if causeOfDeath(celebrity) = COVID && getBoosterCount(celebrity) > 0 then
setPostWithSnark(true)

Though better a Magnum remake than a Columbo one (which would either star a chick or some twink with autism)
Kojak was kind of supposed to replace Columbo. At least from a programming perspective.

Criminal Intent is a bit like Columbo light with a Law & Order twist, as, aside from occasionally losing his cool, Vincent D'Onofrio does the whole "annoying dunce detective that always has one more question" Columbo thing.

Not even modern TV execs are dumb enough to green light a nu-Columbo proper.
It's unthinkable to replace Peter Falk. With Magnum PI it's bad enough, but one may think of a Ferrari, bright shirts and the 80s first.
With Columbo it's "Peter Falk in a trench coat".

Yeah, don't count on that. I'd say the only obstacle is that really only old people are into it, but they tried to remake Murder She Wrote and mostly old people are into that, so nothing is beyond them.

These modern execs don't really get that these old shows aren't like their capeshit. Like, twenty different people could be Batman or Superman. But shows like Magnum, Kojak, Rockford, Columbo, etc, the actors are the characters. You can't just swap out actors and expect it to have the same appeal, the actors are just as responsible as the writers for creating and defining the characters.

Believe me, if it's was announced tomorrow, I wouldn't even be surprised. Slightly amused perhaps, because it wouldn't fare any better than the Ford Mustang Commercial Show Knight Rider reboot - or whatever the Hell it was.

Columbo was made over the span of three decades. The show's entire je ne sais quoi wasn't "homicide detective figures out murder the viewer often already knows everything about".
It's about Columbo, and unmistakable character in mimics, gestures, stature and behaviour interacting with the arrogant elite shitheads or meeting his match. It's about actor chemistry and interaction.

The show's premise can't even be copied.
Worst of all, everyone knows that and agrees.

But will it stop them? And for how long?

Again, you know that and I know that. But the people in charge of this stuff, they don't know that. Because they're a bunch of coked out paedophile idiots.

When their cocaine supply runs low enough, they will just throw a bunch of people together to act out a script, call it 'Columbo' and then wonder why people didn't take to it. Or, worse, keep throwing (ESG) money at it in an attempt to force people to like it if it's a sufficiently diverse, woke piece of agitprop dogshit. I just doubt they will see the money in this.
Also, you've given me a reason to talk about Columbo and I'll do so even unprovoked.
