Re: What are you listening to?
That's part of it. The other is that Metallica has made some real soft Metal for a really long time now.
Ballads like The Unforgiven I & II and Nothing Else Matters got lots of radio play. Even plenty of their "real" Metal songs like Sad But True have such inoffensive and basic riffs that Kid Rock could make a summer hit out of it.
Quite honestly, it's a bit difficult to say what is even Metal about them past Justice.
They are to Metal what bad Eurobeat is to Techno.

I'm not really a music fan.
Im more attracted to image than sound.
Sometimes I forget
that I am a homosexual.

Vomitory released a new album. It's been twelve years since their last album and it's absolutely fantastic! Perhaps their best one yet.
Raped, Strangled, Sodomized, Dead goes fucking hard and has some Black Metal influences:
The entire album is nothing but brutal bangers!

Re: What are you listening to?
I was in the mood for Melodic Death Metal this week. So I mostly listened to old Amon Amarth albums. Especially Fate of Norns and Versus the World.
It's easy to see why they became as famous as they are. Anyone who likes Heavy Metal can dig this:
It's a bit rougher audio engineering than at their peak but the melodies are all there and it's more honest than most later offerings.
That riff breakdown at 3:27 is legendary!
This mid 2000s Death Metal really shows what the entire genre really is: a natural progression of Heavy Metal over the years.
Thrash Metal took Speed Metal, the latter being just fast Heavy Metal, and Hardcore Punk and combined it.
Death Metal however didn't take up Punk or Hardcore initially and just got more extreme. Leading to the dual lead guitars either doubling for brutal riffs or amazing harmonies.
Melodic Death Metal is the logical consequence of Judas Priest's Painkiller, the best Heavy Metal album of all time.
Old Amon Amarth captures some of that energy, their peak emulated the greatness with added brutality!
2:20 and on! What a headbanger!
New Amon Amarth on the other hand are just shit. Surtur Rising was the last good album.
I remember being this recommended by youtube:
>stranger things font
>dumb kids
>board games
>meandering riffs
>boring chorus
>not even a real casio
>anachronistic dice
>no energy
>no melody
>no solo
>no speed
That's the fucking single you go with? The one the album is named after? Really?
For comparison, this was the primo single of Surtur Rising, Destroyer of the Universe:
>blasts off
>hyper fast
>brutal
>vicious breakdown
>amazing solo
>neckbreacking headbanging section
>fit for a god ending everything in burning rage
Shit, have another good one for the end. Valhall awaits me, the first song of With Oden at our side, the album in between Fate of Norns and Twilight of the Thundergods. Perhaps their best album and one of their best songs:

As if "Night Crawler" or "Leather Rebel" weren't enough on the nose.
