They do this shit all the time. It started in the 90s with stuff like killing Superman, crippling Batman and turning Spider-Man into a clone, now it's just degenerated into doing woke shit to grab headlines and bait outrage. Why? Because nobody reads comics any more and a lot of that is to do with the fact that most creators don't actually know how to produce good comics to save their lives.

The only good thing to come out of Superman's gay kid are all those threads on /co/ of Goku making fun of Superman.

Making Superman's kid gay and not Clark Kent/Kal-El feels like such a copout for some reason. As if they're expecting this to backfire once all the woke social brownies points are gone and people go back to not caring about comics, so they could quietly go back to the real Superman.
