Sounds like a German porn spoof for a certain classic Arabian folk tale. The full title woud probably be Ali Kaka und die 40 Scheißer.

I initially avoided this game because I'm skeptical of all indie games. Slain looked extremely edgy and I heard the game was shit. But I stated playing Valfaris and it's been fine so far. Imagine Contra with more secrets and an upgrading system.

What really surprised me about Valfaris was the music. It's phenomenal. I'm not usually the biggest metal nerd. I like the super old metal bands, but tend to not enjoy newer stuff. But this is really excellent. The music is probably better than the video game. Deadbolt had the same issue, where the music was unbelievably good. The game is fine, but the music is insane.

Go to about 4:30 on this one^ A lot of the tracks have very complex layering, where they build a single riff and then keep adding new tracks and riffs over it.

^I love the smooth transitions from brutal chugging to eerie (((cosmic horror))) symphonics.

Valfaris' music has this comfy "Doom meets quake with modern production values" vibe.

Sounds like a seven string in A standard tuning, like Korn uses. So essentially a full tone downtuned. Makes for very easy, super brutal riffs and is a blast to play.

That music is a bit too orchestral for regular listening for me, but sounds great for vidya background music.

If you like that, you might also like Göteborg-style Melodic Death Metal, like At The Gates, early In Flames and Dark Tranquility.

At The Gates is my favourite of those, as they have Tomas Lindberg, who also sang on the best album The Crown ever released, Crowned in Terror, and that I shilled not too long ago in the regular music thread.

I know, that goes deep into high-speed, high-aggression Death Metal territory but I'd suggest at least listening to the chorus.
I can't listen to it while driving, because it leads to me driving like on a racetrack.

Yeah, I almost mentioned that but forgot to. You have to keep in mind that all of this music is in context of a video game soundtrack. So this is what you hear when you are blowing apart alien monsters and climbing biometal blood-spires. That combination of raw chugging with the climbing/layering orchestral mood music is phenomenal within gameplay.

The soundtrack to Valfaris is very atmospheric when you're in the moment. Like I said, it reminds me a little of Trent Reznor's work on Quake. More in the way it works to build mood than in the compositions themselves.

Valfaris as a game is also more coherent than what I was expecting. It's clearly inspired by Warhammer 40k. The game is in 3d, but runs the 3d models through a shittifier to make them appear 2d. I remember vidya journos selling this title as "a heavy metal album cover, maaaan" but the aesthetic is consistent and less random than that.

But do you know what is like an album? The entire game runs together, with no pauses. There are stages and there are transitions that happen within the game (like riding an animal into a new area,) but it never stops the game. The game runs, from start to finish, as one connected piece. Combined with music that all has a similar sort of vibe and feel, so you never quite know if you're on the same track or not. Every aspect of Valfaris has that musicality and consistency.

I guess I'll check it out someday. I was sceptical of it being too shallow.

It's about 90 minutes long in a speedrun or no-death run. Which, if anything, might be a little long for a game like this. But I'm skeptical of what you could cut. Valfaris is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric 2d games I have ever seen.
