Movie Thread
Re: Movie Thread
Just wait until China swoops in and takes over everything. It's inevitable.
Re: Movie Thread
Why bother owning the studios when the studios make everything for you anyway? The failure of Star Wars and Mulan over there won't stop Disney from whoring itself out to the Dragon at every opportunity.

"It's not our war."
"It is now."
Yeah rigga! Great '90s cheese with a bangable Nicole Kidman and Hans Zimmer score before he got up his own ass.

I enjoyed the book (Roadside Picnic), but found the movie a little plodding for my tastes.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 8:23 pmI've watched Stalker a week ago. It's alright, I guess. If you think Kubrick went through great lengths to say little, this movie will end you.
But it's in great quality on YT. In Russian but with good subtitles. So that's something.

Re: Movie Thread
It's pretty but fairly slow. I don't think the ending really justifies the run time.
It's clearly a philosophical journey, like Dante's Divine Comedy (or Inferno as I believe you call it) or the first two Silent Hill games. It's pretty light on that side as well, thought.
One of those movies one should've seen at some point but nothing I'd watch again. I don't think there's something to gain past the first viewing.

Dersu Uzala is on jewtube for free right now. I watched about half of it and it was strangely compelling. Not the sort of movie I'd usually watch. It has a sweet undercurrent of common humanity running through it. Kurosawa movies are always interesting. Sometimes they're kind and idealistic, and other times incredibly bleak (Ran, The Bad Sleep Well, etc.) Kurosawa came late to color, but the way he uses it is legendary.

Oh, that's the one with the surprisingly awesome animatronics work for the time.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 4:26 pmThe Monster that Challenged the World is a pretty good 50's monster movie. It's surprisingly gruesome for the era, not bloody but it makes a point to show what the monsters (giant mutant snails this time) do to their victims.
You could almost use that lovable critter now with some more contemporary horror lighting.
They will try again. And again. And again. The promise of chinabux is just too tempting.Guest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 22, 2020 7:53 amWhy bother owning the studios when the studios make everything for you anyway? Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Now here's a sequel I've been pining for all my life. Maybe they'll do one of Trading Places next.
