Seriously, all modern television sucks ass, especially crap like Game of Thrones. So many 13 episode seasons that are mostly filler. Cut that crap out and you would have a lean 2 hour movie. Instead, it's two minutes with this character, two minutes with that character, and so on. Like a fucking soap opera your mom would watch.

I couldn't watch past the first episode, and I'd actually read most of the books(I enjoy reading more). By far the biggest problem of the whole franchise is its complete lack of focus. Tolkien loved his Middle-Earth far more than the stories he told in it, but LOTR is still a fantastic story and even the Hobbit is a charming fairy tale. In both cases, there's a concrete goal: destroy the Ring, get the dragon's treasure.
Game Of Thrones is just a bunch of arseholes being arseholes until they're threatened by bigger arseholes. And there are way too many arseholes to keep track of.

I never finished LOST when it was originally transmitted, so I decided to go back and watch seasons five and six and compare them to my memories of the early years. And find out if the finale really is as terrible as people claimed.
So far, it's definitely not as good as it used to be, but still fairly compelling. I get the sense that the writers have no real idea what they're doing, but it's much better than just giving up and twiddling their thumbs like some shows in their later seasons. LOST just keeps throwing weird shit after weird shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, and to their credit, they try to make it work as best as possible by interweaving literally everything.

I think the lack of answers is really the only reason why people started falling out of love with the show. In the earlier seasons, the characters' main goal is survival - all the weird shit is secondary. But now there's time travel and a really convoluted mission to get everyone back to the Island and they still refuse to say why what they're doing matters. I would even buy something technobabble-ish like "your destinies/souls are bound to the Island like a magnet and your going away is ripping the fabric of the continuum" or whatever, but they don't even give you that.

Also, I'm super confused why the Others were suck dickheads(edit: *such. Lmao) in the earlier seasons. Nestor Carbonell seems like the most chill guy ever and he's basically their Dalai Lama and is happy to chat with literally anyone who wanders in.

The secret techniques of "hack writing" and "making shit up as you go along" have pretty much resulted in "the Others" seemingly being used to refer to at least two distinct factions over the course of the show.
