Yes, the mystery box worked for a while and it was the best part of the show. But at some point it became obvious that the writers had no clue where they are going themselves.

I learned my lesson from the implosion of The X-Files. No more mystery boxes for me. I knew Lost would be shit from the very start and passed on that hard.
