Re: Movie Thread
That's where I land; even though I think the sound mixing and general editing are still pretty top notch.

Just let this zombie die.
Just let this zombie die.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

I feel like Cawadooty faded into the background but then again I'm pretty divorced from modern gayming. It's like sports games or reality TV franchises that are still running where you know lots of people consoom them yet they're simultaneously not relevant.Rapeculture wrote: ↑Sun Aug 10, 2025 7:56 amCall of Duty needs to die first.

Now that's how to revive a stale genre.

Tropa de Elite (2007)
Tropa de Elite 2 (2010)
Directed by the Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha, Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) was a huge hit in Brazil when it came out and also got some international attention. The film depicts the conflict between Rio de Janeiro's police and organized crime, police corruption, and the brutal and straightforward methods of the BOPE special unit to solve the city's drug gang problems.
Some critics called the film fascist, arguing that it justifies police violence. BOPE was made out to be a kind of heroic unit, as the only effective unit capable of solving the problems of corruption and drug trafficking, and the film suggested that violence is an unavoidable solution and that the problems are caused solely by the criminal population. Violence was not only justified but also necessary, and that it was the best solution to social problems.
The film's protagonist, Matias, is a highly moral and intelligent police officer. While on the force, he studies law and seeks to find a peaceful solution to the city's problems with violence and police corruption. Matias befriends pot smoking students at the university, despite their mocking of his conservative views. Tired of the constant corruption within his own police unit, he decides to join the elite BOPE squad. But when a drug gang kills his friend, the formerly ideologically-driven and peace-seeking Matias transforms into a relentless killing machine who doesn't hesitate to use extreme methods to hunt down the people he's after. In the end, the film shows Matias becoming a part of a brutal system, where violence is the only way to operate. Happy end.
Tropa de Elite 2 delves deeper into the power structures of society, showing how different levels of authority balance their own interests against the city's problems. While the first film's antagonists were the street gangs, the sequel's main villains are corrupt officials from within the police force. These individuals are just as ruthless and cruel as organized crime itself.
The films are based on the memoirs of a former BOPE officer (which I haven't read), and the leftist director Padilha apparently intended to criticize BOPE's actions (and police brutality in general). When I first watched these movies, it never even occurred to me that they should be taken as a critique of police violence.
On the contrary, I thought the films were just harsh portrayals of a cycle of violence without any hidden agendas or messages, and that's why they work so well for me.
Tropa de Elite 10/10
Tropa de Elite 2 9/10
