tbf, when 'Murrican cops order you to raise your arms, you should do that and keep them up, and not do anything that might be seen as reaching for something.

the thing is, what would you do if you hear your door being broken down and people rushing up the stairs?

You can be sure id grab the closest thing to me that can be used as a weapon and when the door bursts open im swinging, how should he know it would be cops? At the moment the suprise, fear and adrenaline have taken over.

They didn't break the door down (why would they, anyways? It was a supposed hostage situation and they had no idea what was going on inside.) and he likely noticed the blue lights and sirens.
