Rareware already fucked themselves over with failures like Jet Force Gemini & Star Fox Adventures
Nobody cared about Jet Force Gemini therefore they couldn't have 'fucked themselves over' with it and as for Star Fox, the reason that was a piece of shit was that Microsoft had already bought them, so they had to cut the development time short. The reason it was even a Star Fox game in the first place was that Miyamoto had an inkling Rare were going to be bought so he convinced them to turn it into a Star Fox game so they couldn't port it to Xbox after Nintendo spent all that money developing it.

Reminds me of the rumors that the only reason Microsoft bought Rare was because Bill Gates incorrectly thought they owned Donkey Kong.

That's not a rumour and Bill Gates personally wouldn't be that dumb. What one of the ex-Rare people said (it was either Chris Seavor or Grant Kirkhope) was that, when Microsoft closed the deal, they sent some of their execs to tour the Rare offices. Rare had 'just' finished DK64, so there were a lot of Donkey Kong posters about. One of the execs saw this and said 'Really? Donkey Kong? We own Donkey Kong?'

Biggest mistake Nintendo ever made was dropping Rareware. Microsoft really dropped the ball with them!
Rareware already fucked themselves over with failures like Jet Force Gemini & Star Fox Adventures. They were always overrated tbh. Just a bunch of uppity anglofags who only got famous when Japan noticed & propped them on a pedestal. The majority of their games were a classic example of Eurojank mediocrity. Nintendo merely separated the chaff from the wheat because the Brits were too embarrassing to work with anymore, so they outlived their usefulness . Microsoft turned them into their bitch, and that's all Rare's good for these days.
Microsoft ruined them though, they have nothing to show for all the money they spent on them except Wii Kinect Sports

Is Kinect even a thing anymore in Current Year?

Yeah that's the hilarious part. Microsoft paid something like $400 million to own Rare and I don't think it's ever paid off. The funniest part is they only bid that much so that Nintendo wouldn't be able to match it and buy the remaining shares

That they didn't do anything with Banjo (for ages) is the biggest joke. The fuck does one buy Rare for if not for B&K?
Don't even get me started on Conker.

Money well spent.
And it seems you're all forgetting the smash hits that were Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Conker: Live & Reloaded
