Yes, you will like X better than the original. The original on the Wii is structured more like a standard JRPG and is very story heavy, while X is more like a western one where it's there but you mostly just do what you want and go fuck up some monsters and shit.

I know "see that place? You can go there" has become a meme but it's applicable as fuck to X. The world is huge and there are so many side quests and things to do that you don't have to worry so much about story missions. You have to be at a certain level to progress in the story anyway so it's like Saints Row 2 where you have to fuck around anyway.

It plays more like an MMO with it's combat and at the end you get giant mechs for all 4 members of your party. And later on they can fucking fly, so you and your buddies can just fly around and kill shit in your giant bots. Only issue is they cost a lot of money for some reason and if you die in them too many times they can be gone for good. I don't know why you cant just fuck around in them and risk dying.
