What I assume to be a White Ally (tm) started
a petition to demand a revision of the Orcs of Thar Gazetteer
A supplement.
Which is exceedingly silly as one
should realize from all the puns found within (there's a "Trollhattan", ffs).
From 1988.
Written for a dead edition (Basic D&D).
And a dead setting (Mystara).
And some shucklefuck
demands a public apology and a
revised version of this product because the orcs are racist caricatures or something.
Some Beta Bitch wrote:Hasbro says that, from an in-world perspective, the human "Mongolian" culture gained their culture and religion by ignorantly imitating these "yellow orcs" and Asian hobgoblins.
Are you high or something? Hasbro doesn't "say" anything because the book came out
decades before Hasbro acquired the license.
And this isn't the only time he confused shit.
All accusations in the petition basically amounts to "
Hasbro commits wrongthink". Even though Hasbro had no hand in anything related to this book.
Also it's the
other way around. Mystaran orcs copy their
human neighbors, because they tend to get their asses kicked by them and try to get some of that human badassery.
Hasbro refers to the"Khan" leader of these East Asian orcs as "the Yellow Demon." Which is insensitively close to the real-world phrase "the Yellow Peril" (aka Yellow Terror, Yellow Specter).
Basically
any time the books writes "The Yellow [thing]", it's racist
Hasbro's product also features "red orcs" whose culture is explicitly based on Native American motifs. The term "red orc" is based on the real-world racial slur "red man."
Oh, make that "The [color] [thing]"
And hang on a second. I thought orcs were only supposed to be
black people? How come they're so diverse here?
These "red orcs" engage in "scalping," which Hasbro says they learned from a neighboring human nation, which is itself also based on real-world Native American culture.
So... scalping was an invention by white people? I didn't cut anything from this complaint. Dude just doesn't want to be reminded of scalping, apparently.
Hasbro parodies the assassinated Lakota leader Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake as "Big Chief Sitting Drool."
Sure, they're
celebrating his assassination. This is totally not a low-effort pun or anything
Hasbro hurtfully adapts the real-world racist proverb "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" as: "The golden rule: A Good Orc is a Dead Orc."
You
do know that Mystaran orcs have
literally been created by evil gods who want them to kill everyone else?
Hasbro also parodies Arab, Persian, Turkish, and Islamic culture by applying those cultural motifs to the monstrous gnolls (hyena-persons) of "South Gnollistan." The leader of the gnolls is named "Nizam Pasha," whose name comes from a Turkish historical figure, Nazım Pasha, who was assassinated during WWI.
Naming a fictional character after a historical one is problematic and racist because...?
Hasbro slanders as "Desert Bums" a human culture which is explicitly based on real-world Arab, Egyptian, Syrian, Persian, and Uzbek cultures, and the Islamic religion.
That's from an ironic
orc map. Of course they'd make fun of their hated neighbors.
And you want an
apology from Hasbro? May I remind you of the little copypasta at the end of
every description of every digital D&D book from before 5th edition?

Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.
They'd probably rather just delist this product before bothering to "fix" it, seeing how these "demands" basically call for a complete rewrite.
But they probably
won't delist it. If they start with
one book
more will follow, and they kinda
need their large back catalogue for that sweet monetization that they crave.
