SIFU
This game is fucking GOOD. Definitely the best Beaten'up (to memorize the pattern then you actually beatemup) & kungfu game I've ever played.
It's such a joke that game award thing chose some furry garbage for the indie award instead of this. I guess that's because this game has no degeneracy in it.
You're officially gay if you're a kung fu movie fan but never played this shit.

The Game Awards show has as much relevance as the Oscars: none.AdorableOtter wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 1:40 pmIt's such a joke that game award thing chose some furry garbage for the indie award instead of this.

Actually even less. At least with an Oscar you could get future job opportunities or ask for more money per gig.

Next you're telling me the esteemed Mashable Award is worthless.

It wasn't Spoony's honour to receive one, it was theirs to give it to him.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 5:26 pmNext you're telling me the esteemed Mashable Award is worthless.

Re: What are you playing?
Alright, checked out Sifu. Yup, it's pretty damn good! Takes a bit getting used to but it feels fantastic getting better at it.
Very interesting life system!
So you start out age 20 and every time you die you age a bit, according to your death counter.
So first time you'll revive at 21 and your death counter goes up by one. So next death you will age by two years instead and so on.
When you reach 80 it's game over.
You can unlock moves with XP you earn from defeating enemies. If you unlock the same move five times, it's unlocked forever and will stay even after a game over.
The moves are tiered by age, though. Your little magic lanyard of coins has five coins and every ten years of age one breaks. Every coin has five skills to unlock. So some moves can only be unlocked until you reach age 30, some until age 40 and so on.
Every ten years you become more of a glass cannon. You get less HP but cause more damage.
Additionally, there are little shrines in the levels that allow you to get a reward in form of a buff. Those don't stay after a game over.
There are five levels with a boss at the end and sometimes a mini boss. The levels have shortcuts, which are also permanent once unlocked.
After a game over the levels also remain unlocked. You can start with any level but you will start with the youngest age at which you ever reached it.
Sounds more complicated than it actually is but it still took me a bit to fully understand it.
The game is pretty difficult. Or rather it's punishing. You can't take many hits, enemies gang up on you and especially armed ones can pretty easily kill you in a three hit combo.
But getting through a crowd that caused you several deaths the first time around without getting hit is very satisfying!
I'll play this for a good while.

Re: What are you playing?
Your death counter will actually decrease if you kill someone.
So dying every once in a while might only add 1 year at a time, but sucking too much at a boss will age you fast.
The references are also pretty gud. The first level has you recreate this klessik:
