The other big problem is they don't get the pixel count right when they stretch to 16:9 in some of these ports that force widescreen with no option for true letterboxing. Like those sanic collections where the "letterbox" is actually just 16:9 but with black bars slapped on the sides (but enemies still exist in that black space.)

That's even worse than the bilinear filter.
Both options are on by default in the otherwise excellent Capcom D&D beat 'em up collection. With the widescreen foing some obvious stretcging for an extra fuck you.

Original resolution or at least aspect ratio is the way to go.

Integer scaling or death.

Pixel perfect with sharp/clean filter and properly emulated crt color blending+lines in original aspect ratio would be the ideal. I don't know that I've ever seen this in a collection though. Not all those pieces together.
